I am so excited to share my current project The Artist as Naturalist 🖤
The concept of this project is to create a visual study of Long Island’s southwestern coastal zones through plein-air mixed-media sketchbook sessions to better understand the strengths, fragilities, flora and fauna of the environment. A natural history study from the perspective of a contemporary mixed media artist. Doesn’t that sound fun??
As for my process, I’ll be exploring the wild spaces that still exist side by side with our developed communities with my traveling art kit. Charting the seasons of winter waking into spring and then settling into the long sun-soaked days of summer.
This is the start of my documenting the places and my artistic process as I go. While I will be working within my sketchbooks as I study, a selection of sketches will then be translated into paintings which I will share and also exhibit this fall!
My hope is that this project will inspire you to take a closer look at the natural beauty around you, become good steward of the earth and maybe even start a sketchbook/art practice of your own.
This here is part 1 from the project series, focusing on the winter months of February and March. Stay tuned for LOTS of more as the seasons change….
This project is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrant Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and is administered by The Huntington Arts Council, Inc.
Thanks so much and long live the arts!!!! 🖤
